DeSoto County Courthouses

Chancery Court

Chancery Court handles special court cases involving wills and estates, support and custody of minor children, divorces and alimony, and lunacy or commitment hearings. The Chancery Court also handles petitions to incorporate or enlarge a city, the establishment and management of drainage districts, and children's welfare funds.

Circuit Court

DeSoto County falls within the 23rd Circuit Court District. The Circuit Court primarily handles felony criminal cases and civil actions where the amount in controversy exceeds $200,000. Jury trials are commonly employed in this court.

Civil Court

The Civil Division of the DeSoto County Court handles civil cases up to $200,000, and has concurrent jurisdiction with the Justice Court in all civil matters, including appeals, evictions, 10-day protection orders and eminent domain cases. 

Criminal Court

The Criminal Division shares jurisdiction with the Justice Court for misdemeanors and preliminary felony hearings, and can handle other felony cases transferred from the Circuit Court.

It has jurisdiction over civil disputes up to $3,500, evictions, garnishments, misdemeanors, and traffic offenses involving the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department or Highway Patrol. Justice Court judges are also responsible for signing warrants, setting bonds, conducting preliminary hearings in felony cases, issuing temporary protective orders, and granting search warrants.

The Youth Court Division of the DeSoto County Court exclusively addresses matters involving juveniles, such as delinquency, neglect or abuse.
